Ok I have done a general watch post where I made it clear that watches can be used as a way to increase value over the purchase price. Watches really should be purchased for the purpose to wear and if one day you would like to upgrade you have the option of selling the watch hopefully for a profit and use the proceeds on the next timepiece. That’s one side of thinking behind watches, but there is another side that I know a lot of men desire to do and that is leave a watch to their kids as an heirloom. Below you will see the best watches list ever assembled.
But now I want to focus this post on a random list of brands and with this list I will tell you which collection gets the best bang for your buck. Basically if you want to buy one of these watch brands the collection you will need to focus on will be the one I will mention below.
Best Watch Collections:
1. Rolex – Day Date President
2. Patek – Calatrava
3. Cartier – Tank
4. Jaeger – Memovox
5. Audemars – Royal Oak
6. Rolex – Submariner
7. Omega – Omega Men’s 3210.50 Speedmaster Chronograph Dial Watch
8. IWC – Portuguese
9. Hamilton – Hamilton Men’s H32515155 Jazzmaster Viewmatic Silver Dial Watch
10. Tag Huerer – Monaco
These watches can be used forever basically as the reliability and functionality behind these collections is unmatched. Obviously with proper care and regular maintenance on the watch movements, these time pieces can last decades. As a general rule of thumb you can get most of these pieces from an authorized dealer and be 100% confident that what you are getting is an authentic watch. If you want to save a few dollars you can find these brands online at select retailers that are not authorized, but you will take a chance that the warranty will not be honored in the event you have to do maintenance on it.
All of these watches are fine choices for anybody looking for a great watch. If I had to choose between all of them and price was not an issue I would go with the Patek Calatrava as this is the most respected watch company in my opinion. On the other hand if price was a determining factor then I would select the Tag, Hamilton or the Omega.
I hope you can clearly see that each brand is flushed with different collections, but if you choose right and are selective you can have the best within each brand. Just do some research before dropping major dollars on any of these and be happy with your choice.
Comment and let me know if you are a watch enthusiast and if you would consider getting a high quality timepiece to leave as an heirloom?
– Update: I am at a point in my life where I do not put material things ahead of my future financial success or security. I save first and foremost for my future and if I desire to buy myself something it is done with cash and with a lot of thought behind it. I am not the type to buy the newest things because they are new. I stick to my plan of getting things that matter to me for my life and make financial sense. I value great watches not only as a way to splurge a little, but also as a way to invest. There is a difference between keeping up with the Joneses or living life on your terms. One is done by having a plan and the other is done by being reckless and trying to outdo everybody else’s lifestyle. Also never buy an expensive watch if you still have consumer debt.

For me, the best watch is Rolex.
I think rolex is very good as well, not convinced yet it is the best.
I agree with you. Rolex is one of the most advertised "high-end" watch, vs the rest including Hublot, etc.
Thanks for sharing!

My recent post Watch Boxes for Men: Should You Spend The Money?
I love the omega blue dial watch that you had displayed. I would buy it.
Yeah, my Rolex – Day Date President is on the number one in this list, Indeed Rolex deserves to be on this position.

In terms of keeping their value (or even increasing), Rolex and Patek are probably the best bets, with Cartier and Audemars Piguet coming next.
Hey.
Commenting on your blog as I am a watch enthusiast, and have been collecting watches since I was 15. Started with a fascination of kinds of watches, and now into their history and builds.
Great post!
