Hey does this topic excite you and intrigue you at the same time because of the rising concern of prices at the pump? Do you have a long commute and just want to do better on your miles per gallon going forward in the future? Well you have stumbled upon the best post on how you can save money on gas. You do not have to drive like Miss Daisy, but at the end of the day driving at reasonable speeds does help save your gas.
It’s very important that people are made award of the cars on this list and then you too can join the 40+ MPG club and possibly reduce your monthly gas bill by half. Why half you ask? Mainly because many older cars on the road, currently average about 20-25 miles per gallon in a combination of real world driving. Now if you get one of the cars I will mention below you will increase the mile output by 15-20 miles per gallon. This net effect will greatly increase your cash flow if you tend to spend a lot refueling the gas guzzler every week.
40+ MPG Car Club: City / Highway
- 2013 Mazda 3 (Skyactive) -28/40
- 2013 Chevy Cruze – 28/42
- 2013 Ford Fiesta – 29/40
- 2013 Chevy Sonic – 29/40
- 2013 Volks Jetta / Golf – 30/42 *Diesel
- 2013 Ford Fushion – 41/36 *Hybrid
- 2013 Toyota Camry – 43/39 *Hybrid
- 2013 Honda Insight – 41/44 *Cheapest Hybrid Available
- 2013 Lexus CTH200 – 43/40 *Hybrid
- 2013 Toyota Prius – 53/46 *Hybrid
- 2013 Chevy Volt – 35/40 *Gas Driving
- 2013 Honda Civic – 44/44 *Hybrid
- 2013 Nissan Leaf – 92 Mpge *All Electric
- 2013 Ford Focus – 99 Mpge *All Electric
- 2013 Mitsubishi I-Miev – 112 Mpge *All Electric
Obviously before you take out your wallet and get one of these cars, you must test drive it to see if you actually get those types of numbers. Also you can do extensive research in Car & Driver and Consumer Reports on actual miles per gallon real world driving test results. You can never really take the word of the car manufacturers because they will lie just to help boost car sales. Recently Hyundai had to reduce the published miles per gallon results for all their car models due to faulty MPG tests done in Korea. They will have to pay millions to correct the error after the fact by giving recent car buyers a credit on gas gift cards.
As you can see the numbers for the all-electric car models are extremely high and their actual mile range is very limited so you have a scenario where for everyday use those type of cars make sense, but for long road trips they do not. I think the gas-powered cars will keep improving on efficiency in the next few years and you can one day drive for 1000 miles on a single tank. Supposedly with the Prius you can do about 650 miles on a tank so we are not that far off.
In conclusion many people argue that these cars above drive like crap and that they rather have a fun car to drive than saving on fuel. I tell those people have fun driving and throwing money away for the experience you get as an amateur race car driver. I wonder how many driving violations they get in a year. Any way this post is for those who want to drive like an adult while at the same time save some dollars at the pump.
